Decline in Butterfly Levels- 02/03/2013
Butterfly numbers in the UK countryside fell by almost a quarter last summer, according to a new scientific study.
Almost three quarters of UK butterfly species have declined in abundance over the past decade. Such low numbers are a cause for concern given that not so long ago the butterfly was likely to be seen in almost every garden and flowery place through the summer months.
The deterioration of suitable habitats is believed to be the main cause behind the declines. You can help by planting suitable flowering plants in your garden. Here are the best plants for bees and butterflies:
Buddleia
Lavender
Marjoram
Red valerian
Honeysuckle
Aubretia
Scabious
French marigold
Bowles mauve wallflower
Lobelia
Chives
Verbena bonariensis
Honesty
Mint
